World Smile Day
Written by Nicole Million, Lead teacher (RECE)
Today is World Smile Day! Have you ever wondered who made the smiley face? In 1963 Harvey Ball created the smiley face and it is universally recognized as a symbol of expression, good will and cheer. Out of concern, Harvey Ball, noticed that the smiley face was being misused throughout the marketplace and its meaning got lost in translation. That’s when he came up with this wonderful idea that every first Friday in October each year, each of us, all of us should devote one day to smile and do an act of kindness throughout the world. Ever since 1999 world smile day continues to be a day about making someone else smile.
It’s significant to me as a teacher to smile at my students each day. No matter the circumstance whether it is at drop off or pick up or when a child makes a mistake or falls to share a smile with the student or child. When you share a smile with a child the guarantee you will receive a smile back is higher than when you smile at an adult. Smile at children because they’ll always remember the people that smiled at them.
